Brooke McMahan Memorial Swim Meet
It just keeps getting bigger and better. The 12th annual Brooke McMahan Memorial Invitational Swim Meet occurred Saturday, Nov. 12th at the University of Akron's Ocasek Natatorium.
With over 150 Special Olympic swimmers and 200 volunteers from Green, Firestone, Walsh Jesuit High Schools and University of Akron's swim teams, plus corporate and individual sponsors the event was an outstanding success. The open ceremonies were very special and included Judges Thomas Teodosio and Linda Teodosio plus special guests U. of Akron President Matthew Wilson and CEO of Special Olympics Ohio Kraig Makohus. The spotlight was stolen by wonderful rendition go the Star Spangle Banner by Miller's South student Timmy Owens. The swim meet consisted of three main activities. First volunteers get in the water with the swimmers for a clinic where they improve their diving, turns, strokes and breathing. The second activity and one of Brooke's (nicknamed "babbling Brooke) was the fun relays that included volleyball, kick board and doggie paddle relays. After a lunch break there was a normal competitive swim meet. Everyone gains so much from his meet. The swimmers love the the clinic where they get the individual attention of high school and college athletes. Of course the fun relays bring big smiles. Brooke's parents, Kim and Chris McMahan and brother Alex love honoring the memory of their daughter. Kim says the Brooke meet is "the most humbling experience of my life. There are not enough words to express our appreciation to all." Below are pictures, video and stories on this wonderful event. |
